New Assistant Principal Named at Windermere Boulevard

The Amherst Central School District named Kimberly Hlavaty, a fourth-grade special education teacher at Cheektowaga Central School District, as the new Assistant Principal of Windermere Boulevard. Ms. Hlavaty will begin her new role on Monday, July 7, 2025. Her appointment was approved by the Board of Education June 17, 2025.

She has been an integrated special education co-teacher in math, ELA, science and social studies since 2014 at Union East Elementary School. She was part of the district’s first “21st Century Classroom Initiative” to integrate technology into the curriculum. She is a co-leader of the special education team at her school and an advisor to students in the media & technology club. She mentors first year teachers and student teachers at Cheektowaga Central. She has presented professional development for her colleagues on various topics in technology and special education. She was coordinator of her school’s multicultural festival and a co-coordinator of “Ability Awareness Night” to share community resources with families.

As an item writer for the New York 3-8 Assessment Program, she developed test questions for elementary ELA NYS assessments. She has presented twice at the Digital Pathways Conferences on the use of Google sites and integrating STEAM in the elementary classroom. She was the liaison for Buffalo State University professors to have their Math Methods course taught at Union East.

She is an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education & Human Services at Canisius University, where she has also served as a mentor for teacher residents. She was named to the New York State Master Teacher Program in January 2022 and served as co-facilitator of an elementary STEAM presentation and a presenter at the 2023 master teacher’s program summer conference.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary early childhood and special education and a master’s degree in childhood literacy, both from St. Bonaventure University. She will receive a school building and district leader certification from Canisius University in August 2025.
